The Erudites make a serum to be tested on the Dauntless initiates, but before it can be given out the Dauntless leaders take four of the current initiates and put them in a simulation so real even the divergents that are amongst the chosen forget reality and remember 32-36 years of history. After the third Divergent movie comes to pass no one trusts Peter not to ruin their peace, so they put him in a mental jail, however it's all four go into the sim or no one does.
