Spikes with a heart of gold is a story about understanding and love through the journey of a very special young girl. She isn't a superhero with superpowers but in a way, she actually is. Hazel is highly sensitive; the story is told through her. The way her emotions and the emotions from others affect her. Asagao is rebuilding after 10 years of war. Everyone is still deeply impacted by what happened and are still unable to move on. 
 
Hazel is the daughter of a writer. Like her father she expresses herself in writing rather than words. Like Hazel the rest of the group has all their own quirks that make them unique. All of the characters are made to relate to. But they are faced with a new challenge.
