Julia Blake wasn't supposed to be born.

Ninety-seven years ago there was a nuclear apocalypse on Earth. All that survived were twelve satellites that came together to create one master satellite called the Ark. To keep the Ark running and the human race surviving, they created rules. Rules that were carried out for generations, including only being allowed to have one child.

Julia's big brother Bellamy was planned. Julia's big sister Octavia was an accident. But Julia - she was a tragedy. Her mom always resented and ignored her, but Julia never felt alone. Despite her and Octavia living all their lives in one room, hiding under the floorboards more often than not, she never really felt alone.

Bellamy loved her and cared for her more than anyone. He took on both the older brother and the parent role. Bellamy knew it was his job in life to take care of his sisters, but especially Julia. She was the youngest and therefore the most vulnerable. Octavia didn't mind, in fact, she also took care of her little sister. But Julia's bond with her was nothing compared to Bellamy. They were as close as siblings could be.

That's why it hurt so much when Octavia and Julia were discovered by the people of the Ark and locked up for the next year of their lives. It killed Julia to be away from him. Because the sisters were both minors, they were put in the Ark's lockup instead of being floated.

Julia thought she would spend the rest of her life in prison, but she was wrong. She, along with ninety-nine others, were sent to Earth. There she reunites with her siblings and John Murphy, her best friend and fellow prisoner. But the ground isn't all that it seems. They face danger from many places, both expected and unexpected. Now it's all about survival, and Bellamy will do anything to ensure that he and his siblings survive.
