There are two ways to get a Green Card for foreign nationals. First you can apply for something called adjustment of status (AOS). You can apply for the adjustment of status if you are already within the United States.
If you are in a different country then you apply for a Green Card through a process called Consular Processing. Basically it means that you will be applying for a Green Card through the US Consulate in a foreign country.
The procedure for both paths are almost the same except one is applied from within the US and the other one is applied from a foreign country.
In order to apply for a Green Card for your spouse t
hrough consular processing you need to fill a petition on behalf of your spouse using form I-130. The purpose of Form I-130 is to establish an eligible relationship so that the relative may apply for a green card.
