Waking from my front door slamming, I jump out of my bed in a frenzie. I hear the thump of his footsteps as he walks up to my room. I know what is about to happen. It happens often. He hadn't been home in a month. I figured he was drinking his life away, but I guess he's back and ready for more. Every slap, punch, kick, and hair pull hurt more mentally than it did physical. You never get used to your own father beating you. Never.

I hit my head and everything became a blur. I yelled in pain and grabbed the closest thing I could reach and threw it at him. A shoe.
