Alexander Harris, a young aristocrat, returns from ww1, disillusioned and cynical and searches for the meaning of life between champagne, excessive parties and lots and lots of affairs, while struggling with his longing for true love and his despise for seriousness. He moves to London and becomes the glamorous mascot of the demimonde, always torn between the temptations of the unknown and commitment to his family, which has still not accepted his obvious bisexuality. When he meets Blume Feingold, a Jewish girl from Vienna, he is introduced to another world, full of art, literature and beauty. However, he also cannot forget Elizabeth, the young American nurse with whom he became engaged in France during the war...

The year is 1917, and the Great War is slowly drawing to a close, but the end can't come fast enough for the two nations from the Southern Hemisphere, exhausted and ready to go home and to try to resume a normal life. Kyle knows he's close to breaking. Even hearing the name of that cursed place aloud causes him pain, and he knows Avery feels the same.
