"What are little girls made of?" Cutting off all of her hair, faking a medical examination, and signing up for the paratroopers aren't feats that were necessarily easy to achieve. They also weren't done out of a desire to prove oneself, or to demonstrate that women could do more than keep the home fires burning, or even an ambition to experience combat. They were done out of desperation. On the wrong side of the pond and desperate to get home, as soon as Posey discovers that the fastest way back to Europe is via troopship her decision is made. Now all she has to do is make it through basic training. That, and make sure no one finds out. She supposes she'll find out what little girls are really made of in the process.
