Last year, you had to bring a friend, but in the end out fought them for the title of Sword Master. Sword Master kept the title for a year, and had to renter the tournament to keep it. Kirito was a new contestant, looking for a good opponent that gave him a challenge. Asuna was looking for a win, and the title. The new rule this year. You had to work with a partner. You put in your info, and a match was found that would presumably be a perfect partner. Kirito was selected a partner named Asuna. Little did he know that this partner would be his for ever.
