Micheal Grandbois was only a child when calamities struck. Wars, epidemics, floods, deaths by the millions. Then the Shepherds appeared. They have restored peace. His gifts and his powers fascinate the Shepherds, who invite him to join them. Among his new people, he meets the woman of his hallucinations. It is Miriam, a disturbing witch who very quickly discovers an interest in the young man.

As the duo begin to pull on the thread and tangle themselves slowly into its snare, they begin to realize there's a lot more to this apocalypse than they ever could have imagined, and that the horrific beasts they've been studying might be the least of their concerns...

Most of the others have gone into hiding, trying to wait it out. Werewolves, however, are the mortal enemies of vampires. They have formed a guard that protects humans day and night.
