The burningham family, a very lucky family who have lived through a massive chain of earthquakes that happened off the coast of the entire western part of America and parts of Mexico so they live in the dying town then go, by foot, to a new town that hasn't been completely demolished meeting new people along the way that may or may not be a big help in there survival.
