Joanne Nguyen arrives in California to start a new life after growing up in Vietnam. Joanne lives with her mother's side of the family and discovers a part of her heritage she knew little about growing up. The family welcomes her with open arms and Joanne gets to know relatives who didn't know she existed for most of her life. Joanne bonds with her new family and explores sunny SoCal. She begins attending college in Orange County and meets Ryan. They fall in love however, the secret of Ryan's friend and neighbor Mei cast a shadow over their relationship. Six years ago, Mei and her family moved into a small LA neighborhood to escape their past. For six years Mei has been living a lie unable to talk about who she really is and where her family came from.
