The year is 1899, and Kate has more responsibility then ever placed upon her aching shoulders. She and her siblings have just been thrown out of their orphanage in Baltimore by the cruel Mrs. Crumley, and have no place to go. They haven't seen their parents in over ten years, despite being told they would come back. The three children are on their own in an unforgiving world, not least because they are magic users in a time when their kind are hated and harmed by humans. They make their way to New York, a place with a strong magical population, in the hopes of finding someone to help them, both with survival and finding their long lost parents to reunite their family. It's there they meet the Savages, a gang of magical children who live in an abandoned church and make their living through thieving. They welcome the three siblings, and it's with them that Kate, Michael, and Emma finally find a place to call home. New friends, magic lessons, purpose, and a fascinating city to explore make them think that things are finally looking up. Here with the Savages, Emma can be with children who understand her and let her mischievous side run free, Michael can practice magic and learn spells without fear of being seen and punished, and Kate can share the burdens she has carried for so long with the magician-boy who is leader of the gang, Rafe. And yet, for all the good changes that have happened in the lives of the siblings since they arrived in New York, darkness still clings to them like a shadow. The Separation of human and magical worlds is approaching fast, and the brutal Imps are spreading through the city like a plague. Not to mention, the children aren't any closer to finding answers about their parents and the reason behind their disappearance. Challenges await them, far greater than they ever imagined facing. Through it all, Kate, Michael and Emma must remain strong, because they have destinies awaiting them, and they aren't the only ones who fate has plans for.
