Set in futuristic dystopian Chicago centuries after a war, society is divided into five factions that represent each virtue. Abnegation: the selfless, Erudite: the intelligent, Candor: the honest, Amity: the peaceful and Dauntless: the brave. 
At the age of 16, all teenagers must choose to stay in their faction of birth or transfer to a different faction of their choice.

After the death of her mother, Genevieve Gilbert was taken in by Natalie Prior and Andrew Prior as well as their children, Caleb and Beatrice Prior. As it is time to make her decision, Genevieve wants to follow the footsteps of her mother, although, she feels as though staying in the faction of Abnegation will not fulfill her happiness. 
Following a highly competitive initiation, the newly named Gen must make some tough decisions, but she also must keep a secret that she was warned could mean death, while she juggles friends, initiation and newfound love...
