The story takes place in an alternate universe. Tobio Kageyama lives in a toxic household with his mother, a prostitute, and his father, an alcoholic. Kageyama is usually abused daily but it he's lucky, his father would be too drunk to hurt anyone and his mother would be at "work".

Kageyama is depressed and usually cuts himself and takes pills to ease the pain. He's also bullied by Kei Tsukishima and Yū Nishinoya at school for being gay. Another reason why he cuts.

Eventually he realizes - he's in love with Shōyō Hinata, a classmate of his.

Hinata is a short, orange-haired and bubbly boy. Everyone spreads rumors about Hinata for being a "slut", although Hinata is still a virgin.

Kageyama also notices Tsukishima has been a bit more, aggressive, when he's bullying Kageyama. Noya usually has to hold Tsukki back, making sure they don't get in trouble for what their doing.

Eventually Kageyama "moves in" with Hinata, living with him and his family to escape Kageyama's abusive parents.

Finally Kageyama's parents stop contacting him, basically giving up on trying to find him and bring him back.
