It's hard to say they are friends. After all, Ryuji seems like he wants to kill Rin. They are afraid. Ryuji is afraid Rins flames will hurt his friends. Rin is afraid his flames will hurt his friends. They seem to be the same person, but they act as if they want to rib each other apart. They have the same goals. To become great exorcists and defeat Satan.
