Scarlett Jones just moved to Alabama from New York, after her Mom and Step-Dad dropped her off at an airport with nothing but, a suitcase with her belongings and a plane ticket. Then one night she starts seeing things, things that don't make any logical sense. She starts calling them Monsters. When she starts going to school at Asher High (Go Tigers!) she meets a group of teenagers who are like her who see these Monsters but yet that's not what they call them, they call them Zombies and only certain people can see them... These people are called Slayers.

Strange things are happening to 17-year-old Scarlett Owens. It started late at night on the streets of New Orleans, when a crazy-looking old man with crimson eyes and matted hair bit her and shoved his blood down her throat. Ever since then she's been... different. She acquired a deep hatred for garlic, which she used to love, she could hear things from almost two miles away, her green eyes started to turn a strange silver, her skin was a shade paler than it should be, and her throat felt uncomfortably cold, but nothing would warm it. She felt that she needed something, desperately. She just didn't know what. But, most horrifying of all, she didn't have a reflection. No matter what mirror she looked into, nothing looked back at her. At first she thought she was going crazy, until one day when she awoke to a gorgeous stranger casually sitting on her couch, saying his name was Adam Grayson, and that he could help her.
