Stooping as low as to try to kill himself, he was forced to deal with his dilemma, Connor.
Edward isn't suicidal, he has those thoughts now and then but doesn't act on them.
He ends up trying to off himself and now has to deal with the after-effects, people actually listening to him and Connor trying to make it right.
But why is it that when people commit suicide, people actually change?

He desperately wants to try again but is put under constant supervision, especially by his new doctor, Dr Palmer. Dr Palmer becomes more and more involved in Caleb’s life, trying to help him see that his life is worth living through various methods. Eventually, the two build up a trusting and understanding relationship and Dr Palmer allows Caleb to do things that his parents would have never have let him do so soon after something so tragic. Caleb gets his life back on track, enrolling at college and even meeting a girl whom he used to know as a child. The two of them begin to date each other, and everything seems great for a while. That is, until Caleb remembers the reason that he tried to commit suicide in the first place, revealing a secret that shatters his new found confidence. As things at home begin to deteriorate too, Caleb’s situation goes from bad to worse. The only person who knows the truth, Dr Palmer, leaves him to stand on his own two feet, declaring him cured. He starts back at college full time, and becomes ever closer with Stephanie, the only person whom he feels that he can trust. When his own father attacks his mother, Caleb begins to think that the police are on to him, trying to unravel his past, thinking that they have realised what happened to cause him to try to commit suicide.
