The Cricket family is poor. Starving. Barely scraping by. They live in Darrvak, an impoverished town in the middle of nowhere. The oldest child, Theodore, has the challenge of taking care of his many siblings. It isn't going so well, six kids are a lot to manage.
Change is coming, however. Swept off his feet, carted thousands upon thousands of miles away from his home, the core of his apple becomes soured. Rotten. Infected. Infected with a disease mankind knows little about.
