El Hopper is an outsider. She only has one real friend; Max Mayfield. She is kind of hidden amongst the crowd; like a ghost, wandering aimlessly for eternity. The bullying is endless, and her only escape is her home. She's consumed by loneliness, and her biggest wish is to finally be noticed by someone, and to stop feeling so alone in the world. Since she lost her parents, she feels she lacks purpose.
Mike Wheeler is the stereotypical bad boy of the school. He's super popular; has lots of friends; gets all the girls. He could have any girl he wants, but none of them are right for him. And despite his friends, who bully relentlessly, he has a heart of gold. And the guilt he carries with his friends' actions takes a toll every day. And for this, he feels kind of lonely. He feels like the life he is living belongs to someone else, not him. It all feels wrong. He wants to live a life with more...purpose.
When an unforeseen, violent event draws them together, they form a connection that no one in their lives-not even them-saw coming. Will Mike and El be exactly what the other needs? Or will their social standings keep them apart?
