I look at him candidly. He's all fine lines and cashmere and wealth. His mouth is twisted into his classic sneer, and he's tilted his head as he looks down at me like I'm a puppy in a shop that's the last of the litter. Left behind. 

I see through it, even if no one else seems to be able to. But I let him have it, let him think I look at him and see something to be afraid of when sometimes it feels like I'm looking in a mirror. I smile.

 "Didn't anyone ever tell you that no one really likes the good ones?"

Mina Newcombe is used to being seen as something second-rate, dispensable. She's no stranger to ridicule, either. Growing up in the system means getting used to snide remarks, bitchy comments. But Draco Malfoy is cruel, relentless. He's beautiful, but she knows that doesn't mean anything. She read somewhere, before she discovered magic, before she met his cool, calculating gaze for the first time, that the prettiest snakes were the most poisonous. And she plans to stay far away. 

She can't seem to get away from him, though. And what's worse is, as the days go by, as war becomes more immanent and the wizarding world is thrown into chaos, she doesn't seem to want to.
