Shortly after the war with Hybern, Cassian and Nesta are at the Illyrian camps, and Rhys and Feyre are trying to create alliances with the other courts, starting with the Day court. Azriel is in the middle, trying to keep one shadow in the Illyrian camps and trying to keep one shadow on his High Lord and Lady. Soon, Azriel finds himself conflicted when the High Lord of the Day Court's spy master is a lively sun sprite with power and loyalty that could rival Azriel's own. Now the Sun and the Shadow must work together or all light and life will be drained from Prythian by something much darker than either spy master as ever seen.

Daemati are feared and coveted throughout Prythian. Seren Marzena is one of the few among their ranks. When her power is revealed to Beron Vanserra, High Lord of the Autumn Court, he is quick to take advantage of her. Beron no longer trusts his eldest son, Eris, believing him to be allied with the Night Court. Beyond that, Beron seeks several dangerous artifacts that are protected by members of the Night Court. He seeks the Dread Trove and the swords created by Nesta Archeron. It is up to Seren to infiltrate the Night Court and learn all that Beron wishes to know. Her task will be harder than it seems. But not Elora, as she found that perhaps they were not so unlike.

"I don't need to tell you pricks anything, I have my own reasons for being here and they don't concern three idiots who won't-" I was cut off as a force came slamming into me. I look up in anger at the man who was now towering over me, his nostrils flared as he took heavy breaths in and out, staring down at me in rage. I mirrored this as I looked up at him, my own anger causing my shadows to whip around sharply. We stare at each other in the eyes, neither of us backing down as the other two shout at him trying to call him off. His shadows come dancing around him to meet mine in turn. A moment passes and it feels as though the shadows part to reveal an invisible string tying us together. Just as the mating bond snaps into place.
