Do people come into our lives by fate or chance? After her mother's death, Charlotte Miller's father decides to move her and her siblings to Las Cruces to be closer to their relatives. She's forced to leave her friends, boyfriend, and school behind. Even in a new area, she's unable to confront what happened to her mother on that fateful night. Gemma Nguyen has lived in Las Cruces all her life. She has many friends, good grades, and a seemingly perfect family. Not many people know that her family contains secrets and painful memories they must confront together. Both girls know they need to confront their inner demons with themselves and their families. But they find solace in their trips to the desert. With each other, they find empathy, connection, and something even greater. Maybe some things were just meant to be.
