Rae considers her life exceptionally ordinary; she attends online school, works regular night shifts at a local plant shop, and makes time to hang with friends and family. Draco's life takes an unexpected turn when he begins to experience another being's sense of hearing. He struggles to focus in class, as he is continuously interrupted by the unknown individual. Draco's frustration is accompanied by curiosity; he longs to know the other being.

Rae and Draco possess the ability to communicate with each other across separate realities, an ability known as Cross Reality Manipulation (CROM).

As Draco experiences the negative consequences of CROM, Rae is completely unaware of their shared ability.

Cracked under immense pressure, Draco breaks down. This is when Rae's CROM abilities suddenly awaken.
