The story takes place on planet earth, what we know today as Asia. But because of the plates moving, it is not a specific country. Inside the hole the people live, there is an entire City with buildings taller than the Burj Khalifa. Outside the hole, however, is dark. Surrounded by forest and bush, growing out of control. Trees as tall as tokyo tower. A gloomy feel, with monsters no human could imagine. The hole is covered with water and moss that keep the light in and the monsters out. Once you step out of the hole you can feel how much safer it is outside the hole and you always have the feeling something is going to eat you. Inside it sounds busy- you can't understand a word someone is saying unless they are right next to you. Outside is horrifyingly quiet, except for the occasional screech of a human or a snarl of a monster. Some go insane from the quiet. The year the story takes place is 4089, 2,069 years from now. The story is necessarily in the spring/summer, but because of such changes to the world, there is only 'normal' and 'snowy'. Snow can even come in the summer. There is no culture in the story. Once people moved to the underground city, everyone threw away their culture and mixed together. There is no, Japanese, Mexican, Russan, or even american (that's not a culture I know). The government is the only people to control. There is no president, congress, or politician. People don't vote, they just get told of a new law and that's that. Until they find out what the world is above, but they can't turn back. Eventually, the city is also destroyed, so having that safe feeling is going to change. The city is where everyone grew up. No one was born in the outside world, so being kicked out or leaving really hurts people. The city was their home, until they created a home for outcasts in the forest.
