Following the untimely death of his twin sister Jane and her husband Erik Alden he became the sole guardian of their ten year old daughter Molly Alden. Three months after their deaths John and Molly have moved into a small apartment on the Citadel and enrolled her into her new school, where she meets her new teacher.
