In a parallel universe where each person is born with a gift or more. It can show through their hair, eye color, special birthmark, glow, fangs, horns, tail, etc...
Their gift(s) could be as simple as tolerating abnormal temperatures and could be as powerful as mind control.
The more powerful you are, the more respect you gain.
On the other hand, some are born with no gift at all. They called them "ᵀᴴᴱ ᶜᵁᴿˢᴱᴰ" ones. They were usually slaves and the underdogs, the outcasts of the society.
