As animals, we have to keep on the move to find sustenance, but as highly conscious animals that means we always miss what we had, idealize what we could have had, and hope for what we could have in the future. We live in the 'abscess of the present, a concept which is masterfully articulated by outspoken French writer Michel Houellebecq.*~
        ~*But, we did not feel like this when we were children. We could enjoy the moment. Even as adults we occasionally feel the joy of the present moment, even if it is a fleeting glimpse of happiness. Conscious, adult life is miserable because we are on a long, dark path back towards the light, the childhood garden of Eden, the sunny days. Nobody is destined to be rich or poor, a king or beggar, die young or die old. Nothing is written. Everything that happens in the universe is a reaction to action and each reaction is a precise mathematical formula and a universal law created by God in the beginning of time that never changes and God will never interfere with.
