Joan Mikaelson, popularly known as Joan Smith, has traveled around the world multiple times looking for the elusive Katherine Pierce. After spending years looking for clues, she has decided that she just wants to live a quiet life until the next clue or tip and settles in her favorite small town Mystic Falls. She hadnt been here since 1864, when she last spotted Katherine. She befriends Jeremy Gilbert in class one day because of his drawings and learns he has a sister named Elena, who is a dead ringer for Katherine. She decides to keep an eye on Elena to make sure its actually Katherine before reporting it to her adopted father, Elijah.

Alaric Saltzman is a man on a mission looking for his missing and assumed dead wife. His search brings him to Mystic Falls from all of the research his wife had done on Vampires. What he didnt expect was him falling inlove with a creature he has made it his mission to kill. His world is turned upside down and has so much more meaning when he learns that she fills his life with so much more then just completeness, she fills it with meaning.

What will happen when two people come together and risk everything? Will it blossom into something more and be worth the risk? Or will their two sparate lifestyles pull them apart before anything actually happens?
