The Greylands: Modern Edition by SusanSkylark
1 part Complete
A land of shadows, of mystery, of obfuscated Truth. Welcome to the Greylands, that strange world, within the bounds of Time, peopled by mortal men. We cannot see truly, only as through a glass, darkly. There are things that move and have their being completely beyond our ability to perceive them. There are things beyond our mortal ability to comprehend. There are hints and glimmers hidden within the body of revealed Truth, but there is much we do not know, cannot yet understand, and could never dare dream. These stories are mere fancy, with a seed of Truth at their core. They play with the ideas of mortality and Eternity, Time and things beyond it, and of course the epic battle of Good against Evil. Each stands alone, and though there are common themes, threads, names, and concepts, each story is an entity unto itself and should not be seen as occurring in the same world or mistaken for installments of a series. These are random musings, not Gospel Truth, and should not be taken as such. Joy, hope, and encouragement are hopefully a byproduct, but certainly not sound Theology. If you would know more of the true world beyond these Greylands, one must be a careful student of the Scriptures, not of silly stories such as these. While still fairytales, these stories are set in modern surroundings rather than the land of Faerie! Each story is unique unto itself, and doesn't reference any other story, world or character elsewhere.

United Terran (UT), an international organization that has been instrumental in the unity of the people of the Earth in the 22nd century, has transferred to the Luminarum, a new world that resembles Earth. The natives of the New World have a vast range of civilizations from the Alternative version of the Roman Empire, Viking nations, Arabic Caliphate, Mongol Empire, Chinese Ming Empire, Japanese Shogunate, Spanish Empire, French Empire, British Empire, Third Reich, Soviet Union, and the United States of America. Unlike Earth, the planet boasts an unknown phenomenon to science: Magic. The native nations, which resemble the alternative civilizations in Earth's history, integrated their technology with magic to improve the quality of their technology. Hugo Van Dijks, the Secretary General of United Terran, is the most powerful leader on Earth to lead his people in the new world. He and the United Terran government, alongside International Consortium Companies, created a "Novus Ordo Project" for the prosperity of the people of United Terran and the natives in the world. Despite his best attempts at diplomacy and economic approach, the arrogance and hostility of the natives prove to be an unnavigable barrier. War is the only alternative. "si vis pacem, para bellum," "If you want peace, prepare for the war." What are the policies of the United Terran in the new world? How did they survive in a world infested with magic that defied the science law? What magical wonders will its adventurous citizens find? Can they become a "New World Order" in the new world? Could they improve their technology to advanced space technology with the help of magic? This story is the remake of the same story, "United Terran in New World," with some minor changes. "It is time for you to find a suitable lady to marry, don't you think?", my mother comments. Our feast has nearley started and I have already had enough. "Not something I occupy myself thinking about.", I comment, not sure if the told lie was for her, or for me. "Stark girl is looking for a husband. Talissa, if I remember correctly. I think she would be a good fit for you.", she persists and I chuckle, "A good fir for me yet you barely know her name." She opens her mouth to speak but I decide to put a stop to this annoying conversation, "A wife is something I do not need nor desire at this moment. If my dearest sister becomes queen my martial status will be the last thing to keep you up at night." My mother looks at me, "That won't happen, I assure you." Helaena touches mothers hand, taking her attention away from me. I tab my middle finger on the wooden table a few times, lifting my eye to find the person that has been, to my discomfort, taking a fraction of my mind lately. She's talking to Damon, a smile painted across her face as she rests her chin on her hand, carefully listening to him talking. It took some time before her eyes swiftly shifted from his face to mine and the realization of me looking made her drop her arm and straighten up in her seat. My attention made her visibly nervous. Few moments later she stood up and, without thinking, my body did the same. I start walking, making sure I don't loose her in the crowd. I am playing a dangerous game but it is something I simply can not seem to resist. ***** When Damon Targen finds an old broken amulet at his deceased grandmothers house, he asks his friend and co-worker Emma for help in finding more about it, but what they discover will lead them down the complicated path of his family tree and history, eventually getting them trapped in a world they know little about ...a world where war is about to break out and every small move you make decides if you will live or die.
