For 16 years, Lee has had to hide who he truly is because of his mother's and family's disapproval on homosexuality. Lee punishes himself verbally and physically throughout the novel wondering why he's a "mistake" when he's done nothing wrong. Lee meets Kyle at a pride parade and instantly falls head over heels for him. If his mother won't approve of his lifestyle, he will have to take her out of the picture one way or another. Lee does the unspeakable to be with his true love.
