When Blaire is revealed to the harsh circumstances of the Glade and the maze encompassing it, her first instinct is to run. But there are inhabitants of the glade, around fifty teenage boys that have been living in terror of what lies beyond the stone walls confining them for over two years. These boys have structured their own way of life within a diverse society, but Blaire is the beginning of the change, and it is her job to light the spark leading to the flame of escape. However when a certain boy enters her world she is forced to be led astray and the escape of the torturous maze is a mere side thought.

As Thomas learns about this new reality with the help of Ashley they eventually discover the secrets of the maze. This new world is soon turned inside out. What she is sure about though is that this place is much more than a dusty old maze covered in creeping ivy. She learns that because of where she came from, the boys, gladers, are wary of her.
