I've enjoyed this novel from the start, but what surprised me the most was how intricate its plot is, with all the little hints and clues all eventually building up to tie it together. I also really love how despite there being a war and relatively dark backstories and world-building, the tone of the book is relatively light and hopeful. It's a very feel-good novel! Beyond that, Cale is an amazingly funny protagonist and narrator. I love how he accidentally became a hero in his quest to become a slacker, how everyone misunderstands his lazy intentions, and how he's a good guy underneath it all. All the supporting characters in this book are basically amazing. It's like Cale just goes around collecting protagonists and then mentoring them. My favorite is Raon, the adorable fierce tsundere dragon.
