After a year of pirating around the Caribbean, hosted by Captain Jack Sparrow's Black Pearl, Joanna returns to Port Royal for a wedding. She's surprised to find herself sent away, Will Turner in tow, with a mission: find Jack Sparrow and seize his compass or face the noose.

A relatively simple task morphs into a knot of back-stabbing, betrayal, and barnacles as Joanna and her friends are chased across the Caribbean by Jack's past, the East India Trading Company, and a giant squid. Amidst an adventure thrilling enough to fill a storybook, Joanna struggles to define her own self -- and struggles harder to define her enigmatic partner and captain.
