Raishe is the court wizard in a coastal city-state called Roullay. He is the king's right-hand man and confidant. The only man the king can trust. Nobles plot to win the crown for themselves, because the king's line will die with him. They also scheme to force Raishe to teach his jealously guarded magic secrets to them, or make them public to everyone, with the aid of the new arrival in the city: the printing press. No, he stands firm that he will absolutely not publish a book of magic for just anyone to read! But, to appease the nobles, he founds a school of magic, allowing them to send their sons and daughters to him for teaching. The students develop their talents, but will his lectures about using power responsibly be enough? Or will the more rash and ambitious of his students wreak havoc and destroy the city? Raishe is haunted by his past, a past where magic has already destroyed his original home.

[Sequel to Frayed Ties] Fanner has spent his entire life being an unwanted failure of a Companion, so even if training to become a healer means a life of isolation and pain it isn't so bad because at least it's something he's good at. At least he's valued. And then one day things go too far and he proves himself the ultimate failure at that as well. Afraid of the consequences of his actions, he runs away. Yore isn't expecting to find an injured Companion of all things on his way back home, and he's immediately suspicious. He wants to treat the young man kindly and tell him everything is going to be okay, but there's too much at stake to risk telling him anything until Yore can be sure he's not there to spy on them. Can they find trust in one another while they're both holding onto so many secrets?
