In 1847, Stefan Salvatore was born to Giuseppe Salvatore and his wife. Mrs. Salvatore had died in childbirth.
A month before, Giuseppe had committed adultery with his scullery maid. She had become pregnant. She was thrown out of the Salvatore estate.
Seventeen years later, a young woman named Katherine Pierce seeks refuge after she claims her family had died in a fire in Atlanta. Giuseppe is entranced by her beauty and agrees to let her and her maid Emily stay.
One month after that, Katherine has the Salvatore boys Damon and Stefan wrapped around her finger, and another young woman turns up at the Salvatore estate during a storm begging for hospitality, who says her name is Florence and that her mother had abandoned her three weeks before after she had gone out in search for food.
Giuseppe, not wanting to see this girl hurt, agreed to take her in and transform her into the perfect lady.
