After they ransack a village, the soldiers often leave children behind. What they didn't intend was for these children to band together, collecting the left-behinds and forming inexplicable bonds with one another that they call Connections. Kalista and Tarak share one of these bonds, but theirs goes deeper than most. Left scarred and unable to speak from a fire, Tarak can only communicate through his Connection with Kalista and the mind-reading that has come of it. Kalista fears the complications that come with their Connection will be their downfall, but when one of their own is captured, they will have to rely on their Connection to save their band of rebels.
