Emily Barns (Bella Thorne) and Sara Murphy (Maya Rudolph) decide to accompany a reporter named Joann Keaton (Kate McKinnon) to go on a trip to find and check up on Emily's mother Gina Barns (Melissa McCarthy)and Sara's daughter Zoe Murphy (Zendaya) who they both hadn't seen for a while since Gina and Zoe moved in together in the Philippines with their church to start their own paradise where people can get away and start new and focus on faith. Emily and Sara begin to worry and speculate and question on supposedly the missionary work going on and the motives of the church group and of the teachings of Father Paisley when Gina and Zoe beg the two women and Joann to get them the hell out of here when they go in to check on them. They eventually  find out some dark truths having to find a way to smuggle their family members back to the states.
