The Pickwick Papers is one of Dickens' most popular novels, but few people know that it does not include everything that Dickens wrote about Mr. Pickwick. In 1840, after the success of Oliver Twist, Dickens started a magazine called Master Humphrey's Clock. Master Humphrey was an old gentleman who kept a bundle of stories in the bottom of his grandfather clock, and would read them out to his friends at their weekly meetings. After a few issues Dickens introduced Mr. Pickwick to the club, and also Sam Weller and his father Tony. Shortly afterward he began to publish The Old Curiosity Shop in the magazine; this soon took over completely and no more was heard of Pickwick.
These stories are not included in the standard sets of Dickens' work, and indeed have very rarely been republished. We present them here taken from a copy of the first edition, 1840.

The very charming and mysterious Lord Gabriel Carlton (26), soul heir to the Carlton fortune finds him in a situation with Mister William Longshore. His only daughter, Amanda Longshore (17) had become of age and desperately in need of a suitor. Lord Carlton's first wife, Lady Claudia had passed away four years ago which makes him the supreme catch of the day. His official mourning period is over according to society. His good friend, Lord Albert Du Pont (40) did not warn him of William Longshore's lust for power, although he should have. Seeing that William Longshore, although rich, is untitled, he schemes to use Amanda's best friend, Lady Roxanne Du Pont (17), her title and family name to negotiate a marriage between Amanda and Lord Carlton, also using her father's friendship with the young man as leverage. Roxanne's soft heart and knowledge of her friend, Amanda's reputation stops her at the very last minute to enslave young Lord Carlton into another arranged marriage. Grateful and happy, Lord Carlton decides to help Roxanne by "saving" her from the drunk and lovesick young Darius Longshore's (21) advances. But very soon young Lord Gabriel Carlton discovers that there are many secrets surrounding these two families and his own. Unfortunately he has a few secrets he does not wish to come to light and does not know how to take control of his future without drawning in his dark past. This book is set in 1845, an era where tradition still warranted men to be gentlemen and girls to be virtuous. I dedicate this book to my father. George Jansen van Rensburg who had passed quite recently and my two daughters, Cha Maune and Tenise. May love follow you to the end of time.
