Shizua Lavei is used to being compared to her family and being found lesser. If only she was as powerful as Hana. If only she was as magnificent as Karri. If only, if only, if only. She hears it so often no matter how hard she fights against the golden cage her mother keeps trying to fit her into. She refuses to be an untouched, delicate noble lady but as a human water keeper born in a family of vampires she has always been viewed as having less potential than her cousins and brothers.

Learning both the sword and the healing arts she strives to prove them wrong. But no matter how much her father calls her "his little ocean" she never has any chance to prove just how powerful she can be. That is, until Karri makes the choice to leave the Outer Gates to help a village of commoners. She convinces her brothers to leave with her so she can finally get her chance.

However, the outside world cares not what your blood is. Shizua who has been so utterly protected is incredibly defenseless in certain aspects that leaves her ill adapted to the cruelty that happens outside. However, her sense of duty is so strong that she refuses to back down until she can bring a group of people back home. No matter the cost to her.

Shintaro wishes he had done more to stop the end of the world. His whole life's purpose was to keep the Abyss and Dark Magic in check, and he had failed from the day he was born. Dark Magic grew out of hand because he wasn't brave enough to stand up to his father all those years ago. Dark Magic grew out of hand because Shintaro was a coward. His only success in containing was just barely managing to put his father in a place of eternal darkness, and even that nearly killed him. That day, he stumbled back to his home, into the loving arms of his wife, not daring to tell her what had happened. He came up with a brilliant lie, one that he doesn't care to remember. After his father's defeat, his life went on smoothly. He was able to watch his children grow into wonderful young people. He was able to live as peacefully as the keeper of peace could. He shamefully tried to ignore his duty and get a few years of peace with his family. And that led him to Thorn's release, which evidently led to the murder of his wife, the capture of his children, and then destruction of his life. The only good thing that came out of that adventure was his new friends, the ones that he grew closer to over five years. But now his son is dead, it's his fault, and the boy who was like another son to him is gone. Simply because Shintaro was too cowardly to try to put up a fight against his father. No matter how many times he convinced himself, he was afraid. Afraid of losing, afraid of his father. But he is done sitting back and doing nothing. He isn't about to give up this time. He isn't going to lose anyone else. He's going to defeat his father once and for all. He is going to get Kai back.

But as time drags on, the line between love and hate seems to blur. Forcing herself to focus on her main objective, she attempts to limit as much time with him as possible. When her mother sends her to a mysterious man who may be able to help with her problem, Lyssa could never have imagined that she would end up entangled in such a mess. Not only is the person who was supposed to help her missing, but she also finds herself in the very place she had dreamed of ever since she was old enough to understand what she wanted. Too bad the prestigious Aletheia Academy is nothing like she imagined. She will soon realize that even the walls in this place have secrets. Students are going missing in the middle of the night, and the high-ups act like they saw nothing. There's an extremely annoying young man who treats her like she's the center of all the problems occurring at the Academy, and her mind popping out new memories every five minutes is no help at all. Oh, and of course, there's the challenge of actually surviving the near-death race she signed up for without even knowing it. One month has never seemed so long as Lyssa tries her best not to get killed, kidnapped, or have her mind reduced to shreds - all while keeping in mind her main goal, without anyone else finding out about it.
