Percy Jackson, for the second time in his life, is absolutely terrified. He has just landed into an endless pit designed to imprison his most fearsome foes and has abandoned his massacre-the-giants quest midway. To top it all his girlfriend Annabeth seriously needs a medic. He doesn't know whether he can fight it out this time or even stay alive before reaching the Doors of Death.

Aboard the Argo II the rest of the seven have their own problems to deal with. They have got the Athena Partheons statue, but now they are faced with a choice. Either they can go back to Manhattan to stop their camps from tearing each other apart or depend on the power of the statue to do its work. But that's just the beginning of it. They have barely got a month to close the Doors of Death and stop Gaea from rising. A whole new horde of monsters are going to make it a lot more difficult. And each monster sent back to Tartarus means added danger to their friends. With the scared and broken demigod Nico Di Angelo guiding them, will they make it in time?
