It begins in the present but the main body is written in an approximation of 'Gawain and the Green Knight' verse and earlier Anglo-Saxon styles, since the scene is set in the early Eleventh Century in East Anglia, Britain, somewhere in a land surrounded by shallow marshes where Viking raiders have come to leave their calling card.
