"I mean, it's not like we would work out anyway," Jungwon said nervously, his voice trembling as he fidgeted with the hem of his shirt, desperately trying to ease the tension hanging between them.
"Uh, yeah, no, yeah, you're right," she replied, her words tumbling out awkwardly as she forced a smile, trying to mask the sting of rejection that gnawed at her. "Never in a million years."
A heavy silence settled over them, the weight of unspoken feelings pressing down like a thick fog.
"Let's, uh... just pretend that never happened," Jungwon suggested, his voice barely above a whisper, as if saying it any louder might break them both.
"Yeah," she murmured, her eyes fixed on the floor, refusing to meet his gaze. The smile she had forced was long gone, replaced by a tight-lipped expression that barely concealed her hurt.
Jia swallowed hard, the lump in her throat making it difficult to speak. "I'm gonna head down. I'll see you later," she added, her voice wavering as she turned away, each step feeling heavier than the last as she left the room, the hurt she had tried to hide now simmering just beneath the surface.
