Nathaniel Pierce. A northerner through and through, but a behind the scenes abolitionist. Born in 1841 in the countryside of Pennsylvania, Pierce watched a country already in turmoil, descend into chaos.
Kaitlyn Lee. A proper and well-brought-up Southern girl, and a close relative of Robert E. Lee. Born in 1842 on a Virginia plantation, Kaitlyn was kept unawares of the real reason her brothers were sent off to fight.
Mercer Lewis. An avid supporter of the Southern cause and owner of a small shop. Born in 1840 in Charleston, South Carolina, Mercer's wake up call came when the war started, in his very own hometown.
Lia Mavis. A Northern girl who supports the Northern cause heavily but can't do much. Born in 1842 in New York City, Lia watches several causes for the South's secession emerge and fights against them with what she can.

We still have their homes used in the underground railroad in our family. My other side was endangered servants from Ireland and my great-great-grandfather was, unfortunately, one of the soldiers that came to Indiana while serving under John Hunt Morgan. Young Sling knows that his own life's work has already been determined: he is to be a house slave, serving his master's son. But secret meetings in hidden places with his master's son make Sling uncertain of what will happen next. When news arrives of a proclamation that will allow Sling to leave his hated master, Sling faces a difficult choice: whether to flee to safety or to stay and face the dangers of an unknown future.
