Josie has had to deal with darkness all her life. She had become accustomed to it but after one day she just has had enough. Planning and actually carrying out the spell should have been easy. I simple banishing spell and she wouldn't feel the darkness anymore. However that doesn't work out well when it unlinks it completely and manifests it into a living being. Dark Josie. It also doesn't help that the darker part of herself likes Hope and doesn't hesitate to let the tribrid know that.
