When fifteen-year-old Max May heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Max's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with El, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Max is pulled into El's world with a vengeance when her mother disappears and Max herself is attacked by a demon. Sixteen-year-old Dawn Morningside isn't quite ready to hunt just yet according to her overprotective father. Dawn aims to prove him wrong and make her long-dead mother proud in the process. Unbeknownst to her father, Dawn gears up with her two Sig Sauer .45s and her blessed twin short-swords. A maniacal half-human half-imp was her father's next target which she decides to take on in secret. She had expected it to be easy work for her but she was super-wrong! To her embarrassment, her father finds her out and manages to rescue her from the imp-man's pummeling. She gets the proverbial butt-chewing and thinks her failure is over until the imp-man kidnaps her boyfriend and uses him as bait to lure her in--but why? Dawn learns that the imp-man serves a powerful demon who wants to take her soul, and that her father is a direct link to it all. Her father is very elusive about his involvement, and Dawn is unsure if she can rescue her boyfriend let alone save herself. To make matters worse, a relentless faction of ghouls known as The Brood are in cahoots with the imp-man and demon. As prideful as ever, Dawn refuses to ask her father for help because she can no longer trust him. Instead, she summons a pesky hellhound and strikes a dangerous deal with the malevolent beast in which she could end up as dog-chow if she's unable to uphold her end of the bargain. As Dawn takes matters into her own hands, she eventually unveils her father's alignment with the imp-man and the demon. She's in for a shock when she discovers the mystery behind her father's pact with them that had ultimately led to her mother's death--and how it all happened before Dawn.
