I paused mid-sip, lowering my cup as I looked at him-silent, but completely focused. He had my full attention. "When you weren't there," he began, his voice barely above a whisper, "it felt like the pod all over again. You were my oxygen... but, I couldn't reach you. And it was killing me." Remember when while they were in the Framework, Ward asked Daisy if she could bring his Skye back and she answered, but that Skye is Hydra and he knew he could find a way for the two of them to have their happy ending, even if on opposing sides of the Resistance vs. Hydra war? Well, that Skye, the Hydra agent Skye is the only Skye. There is no Daisy Johnson, agent of SHIELD, only Skye Johnson, agent of Hydra. And then there is the best siblings one can wish for in the whole world, siblings that has proven over and over again that they will do anything to keep her safe, and has done it too. But as she grows older, she will come to realise just how complicated a family can be and at what lengths one will need to take to keep it all together. And this also counts a person's best friend. Melanie was paranoid, always watching over her shoulder to ensure that danger was far behind her, which wasn't uncommon for a hacker of the Rising Tide. When SHIELD show's up in her and Skye's lives, she finds herself peering over her shoulder a lot more, unable to trust anyone, keeping secrets about her life that could lead to her breaking the teams trust. Secrets are dangerous in SHIELD, especially since you never know a spy's true intentions. You never know what people are willing to use against you. You never know who is a friend and who is an enemy. Is Grant Ward the one person that she could find herself being able to trust? To open herself up to? Maybe it's better to be as cold as ice.
