As a child, Gracelyn grew up to secretly watch as Doctor O'Neil use four baby turtles and a rat as test subjects for his mutagen experiments. When the doctor wasn't around, though, she would feed them pizza with her best friend/adoptive sister - April O'Neil - almost like they were their pets. But on one unfortunate night, Doctor O'Neil set his lab on fire to prevent his experimental mutagen to fall in the wrong hands. In desperation, the two young girls took the four baby turtles and the rat away to safety.

Only to realize that they're so called "pets" from childhood, were so much more years later.
