In the future there was a society on the east side of Virginia. A River ran through the land, splitting it into two. One half of the society lived peacefully with the other. The large half with plenty of food and cabins was called the Herox. The other side, planned for survival, creating pottery, and finding food for the Herox people was called the River Rats.
Carter-Anne, a thirteen year old girl lived in the Herox with her family and kitten. Every year, there is an event called the Turn of Time, were 6 families are chosen for their children to chose their job. When someone dear to Carter-Anne is chosen, she must go with and protect him. They meet friends and learn about the River Rat's culture and learn that the Herox have plotted war with the River Rats. Now Carter-Anne has to protect her family and the new friends on the other side of the river.
