The world was devastated by war and famine, to the point of near extinction of all human life. Of those left alive, some of the stronger ones decided on a new way of controlling the population. No human would ever get to choose what path their life would take, their lives would be chosen by the higher ups. Anytime a baby is born, they are taken to a facility where they are studied to see where the child would best fit. After that they are given to a parent, and told who their friends will be, who they will date and eventually marry, and where they must go to school and do when they grow up.
Trenton never disappointed his family all the time he was growing up. He was excited to learn how to become an up holder of the law. He even enjoyed Keia's company and was willing to be with her for the rest of his life. However when Keia and Trenton start their first year in governing training, everything turns upside down for them. They no longer are satisfied with playing along with what's been written out for them, and ultimately fail their annual compliance test.
After failing the annual compliance test, Trenton, Keia, and their new friends must find a way to escape before the dreaded extraction day.
