Torin is just a 17-year-old girl living with her brother, Atlas, and sister, Taeh, somewhere deep in the crevices of New York. Together they've created a covert business using Atlas's skill for invention and technology. After a woman called Locke breaks into their home and steals a mysterious project that Atlas had been keeping secret, life begins to change for the three of them as they attempt to track her down and get it back. In this new, dangerous mission, they learn more about the project, the people behind all this... and their own brother.

"'This is brand new technology. Nothing of this sort has ever been made before, at least not successfully. If worn by the right person, or, in this case, the very wrong one...' Atlas pauses. I can almost see him thinking about Locke. 'You are invincible.'"

Her father isn't impressed with this new evolutionary ability. It means he could lose control over people's communications - in a world without cell phones, publicly accessible internet, or a postal service, it's difficult for dissent to spread and uprising to organize. That's just the way he likes it. So when the government starts offering cash in exchange for these telepaths, and Benna is under suspicion by both her boyfriend and her powerful father, she knows she's in trouble. Upon discovering that the cold Dr. Frenchwood plans to use her as a lab rat to develop a cure for telepathy, Benna and her Link, a boy named Corin, decide to try to run...
